Living rooms can sometimes be overlooked now that so much of our at-home socializing takes place around a table in an open-plan kitchen space, but nothing beats being able to sit comfortably with friends and family, to talk, enjoy a drink or watch a movie.

Comfort is key to creating a relaxed, sociable living space, so concentrate on getting the style and position of the seating right, then build up from there, adding fun touches, handy side tables and just the right lighting.

1. Provide Different Types of Seating

If your basement is merely utilitarian — or looks straight out of “That ’70s Show” — you’re probably not maximizing its function, value or appeal — or, for that matter, your potential for fun! Check out these awesome basements for inspiration on features you might want to consider for your own remodeling plan to go beyond the purely practical.

1. Home Bar

Raise your hand (or your glass) if you or your parents had a basement wet bar back in the ’70s, complete with wood paneling and shag carpeting. Well, that American classic is back in a big way, albeit with modern finishes — like those incorporated by Case Architects & Remodelers in this basement remodel in Herndon, Virginia.

The hardworking laundry room can be an afterthought in some homes. Tucked away in the garage, basement or a tiny closet, it’s easy for the space to become dark, dingy and cluttered. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the layout and design of this workhorse. Since washing clothes is a frequent chore, why not create an inviting area that’s easy to keep neat and tidy? Whether you’re using a garage, basement, closet or even a dedicated room, here are some tips for creating a laundry area that’s easy to keep organized.

Getting Started

Inventory items in your laundry area. I recommend taking inventory of the items currently stored in your laundry room and deciding if this is the best place for them. Be intentional about what you plan to store…

Though all small spaces present design challenges, the living room can be especially tricky as it is where you probably spend the most time and entertain guests as well. How do you strike a balance between making the room feel as spacious as possible while also squeezing in extra seating? What furniture should you choose, and where do you put it? These design tips will help you make the most of your space.

Use Mirrors and Wallpaper

A small living room, especially if it’s short on windows, can feel a bit boxed in. Create a focal point, boost light and add depth all at once by adding wallpaper and hanging a mirror on top. If you can position the mirror across from a window, all the better — the mirror will reflect the view outside,…

Entryways are among the hardest-working spaces in a house. A well-designed front or side entry should provide some organizational components for shoes, keys, mail and even sports gear. And its style should help set the tone for the rest of the home. You’ll find ideas for all kinds of entries in this countdown of the most-saved entry photos of the year.

10. Open and Closed

With its mix of open and closed storage, this entry by Everything Home helps the Indiana family members stay organized as soon as they walk in the door. Deep drawers, open lockers and baskets store outerwear, shoes and bags. A floating desktop is a great landing zone for keys and mail. Dark wood adds strong contrast, while curved corbels provide some flair.

February is a time of year to indulge in home comforts like cooking big-batch meals, reading in the afternoon and watching movies with the family. Here are a dozen ideas to add to your to-do list this month, from the necessary (clearing sidewalks of snow and ice, say) to the just-for-fun (treating yourself to weekly flowers). Things to Check Off Your List in an Hour or Less

1. Rotate your mattress. Before you put on a fresh set of sheets, take an extra minute to rotate the mattress if you haven’t done so recently. Rotating your mattress every few months will help it wear more evenly and extend its life (and comfort).2. Pack up a bag of old sheets and towels to donate. If you bought new sheets or towels during January white sales, make some…

After more than six years in their Austin, Texas, home, this couple envisioned creating stylish midcentury-inspired interiors that lean heavily on natural materials and tones. With two young kids and a dog, they dreamed of having finishes that were playful and, above all, durable.

To get everything they wanted, they put together a design and remodeling team to strip back the existing home and build an addition. For the interiors, they worked with designer Jessica Nelson of Etch Design Group to incorporate natural elements like white oak kitchen cabinets and marble countertops (sealed to be kid-proof).

In the living room, classic midcentury-style furniture pieces and a matte black tile fireplace elevate the look, while a light-colored…
